Deciding on the Right Type of Wedding Dessert

Most couples automatically think that there must be an elaborate wedding cake at their reception…yes, this might have been true 5 or 10 years ago…but couples today are bucking tradition and opting for desserts that better suit them! Here are some ideas you might want to consider if a grand wedding cake doesn’t fit your taste or personality…

1. A Dessert Bar: This is a table set up with candy, cookies, brownies, and other sweet treats that you love. We recently saw a s’mores station and fell in love with the idea! If your wedding has a distinct theme, be sure that your dessert table reflects it (ie. vintage candy jars for a vintage inspired wedding).

2. A Family Pie Table: If you are having a DIY type of wedding and want to save costs while insuring your guests will like the dessert, consider a table in which families are asked to bring their favorite pie. This is perfect for spring and summer weddings because the height of fruit/pie season is approaching!

3. A Popcorn Bar: No we aren’t crazy with this suggestion, and yes popcorn bars are all the rage at the moment. With a popcorn bar you can help your guests feed not only their salty cravings, but all their sweet ones too (Mmmm caramel corn). You would be amazed at the types of popcorn people are engineering! Not only is a popcorn bar/station unique, but it also has a fun, carefree quality and definitely does not fall under “traditional”.

4. Cupcakes: Yes cupcake trees have been very popular in the past and many people feel like their time has come and gone, but not us! For those couples that have picky guests or can’t decided on a the perfect cake flavor, cupcakes are a great alternative! With cupcakes you can have a variety of flavors and arrange them in very creative ways.

5. A mini cake: Don’t feel like you have to buy into the idea of an eight tier cake, when in reality you might be just as happy with a two tier cake! Smaller cakes not only save you money but they are adorable. If your wedding celebration is slightly smaller you can have a couple mini cakes with different flavors for your guests.

As you can see, there are a variety of ways to turn a traditional wedding cake into a much more personal dessert! If you have additional ideas, please leave it as a comment for this blog post! Mahalo <3

The Sticky Issue of Inviting Exes to the Wedding

When it comes to the people in our pasts, the decision to keep them there or bring them into our futures can leave us totally perplexed.

It seems as though “experts” on this matter have clearly defined answers (do or don’t) and there is not a real gray area. On one hand, if you are now just good friends with your ex and you can’t imagine your wedding without them there than A Do or Don't? you might want to bring this up to your future spouse. When you ask people individually if they would allow their ex to be at their wedding most say “sure as long as we are friends”, but if you ask that same question about their spouse’s ex, you get an entirely different response. Needless to say, the conversation about inviting exes to your upcoming nuptials might be a little awkward between the two of you. On the other hand, having an ex at your wedding has the potential of being extremely weird for everyone. It will be weird for family, friends and not to mention your future spouse. If there are children involved, inviting your ex to the wedding might confuse them and make the situation more complicated. Remember this is YOUR wedding day and you want it to be magical and stress-free!

If you do plan on inviting an ex, here are some notes to keep in mind:

  • Invite your ex with a guest. This way, he or she won’t feel alone.
  • Greet your ex on the receiving line as you would any other guest. Introduce your ex as an old friend or the father or mother of your children.
  • Seat your ex with people he or she knows and likes.
  • Limit chatting with your ex to just a few minutes when you’re visiting guests at their tables.
  • Don’t dance with your ex. There is no reason to become the center of gossip at your own wedding.
