Cutting Your Wedding Expenses Without Sacrificing Your Vision

Scanning through the hundreds (okay thousands) of wedding articles out there it is easy to find a lot of repetitive and out-dated advice. Business Insider recently published an article though that veered away from the “traditional” budget advice and gave some intriguing suggestions for new age brides. We found it so very helpful that we wanted to share some of it with our Hawaii Wedding Match community!

New Age Ways To Cut Your Wedding Costs

Skip the Paper Invitations: Beautiful wedding invitations printed on paper can be costly. You need to pay to have them printed, then pay for postage for the invitations and the reply cards. In today’s world, they can also be a bit of a inconvenience. Instead of going the paper and mail route, one of the best ways to save on wedding invitations is to send them electronically. Websites such as Evites let you send free invitations. If you have money in the budget for invitations, a website such as Glo offers monthly or yearly packages for your invitations.

Let Your Bridesmaids Rent Their Dresses: Nearly every woman has some ugly bridesmaid dress languishing in her closet. If the guys get to rent their tuxes, why do the women have to pay full price for a dress they will wear once? Luckily, bridesmaid dress rental services are becoming an option. Little Borrowed Dress is a company that specializes in bridesmaid dress rentals. You pick the dresses you want your bridesmaids to wear a few months in advance. The bridesmaids receive the dress in the mail two weeks before your wedding. The company will send two sizes for the price of one rental, just in case one dress doesn’t fit. After your wedding, the bridesmaids send the dresses back to the company.

Rent Your Rehearsal Dinner Dress: You not only want to look great for your wedding day, you also want to look great for the rehearsal dinner. As with the bridesmaid’s dresses, you can rent a dress for yourself for the dinner. Rent the Runway is a company that allows you to rent beautiful designer dresses and accessories. You pay around 75 percent less than the cost of purchasing the dress to borrow it for either four days or eight days.

DJIY: Long gone are the days when hiring a DJ meant having someone bring in a few turntables and fancy sound equipment. Many DJs work off of iPods or other MP3 players these days, which you most likely own yourself. Instead of paying a DJ by the hour, spend $1.99 to download My Wedding DJ , an app that runs on iPod Touch or iPhone. With the app, you can program playlists for your entire wedding.

Be Your Own Florist: Flowers can add to the cost of your wedding considerably, especially if you choose fancy flowers from a high end florist. For example, Calla lilies and peonies tend to cost twice or three times as much as roses or daisies. One of the easiest ways to cut costs on your wedding day is to purchase cheaper flowers and arrange them yourself. If you aren’t comfortable in your floral arranging skills, you can get an app for that. Florista isn’t free, but it will teach you a new skill you can use long after your wedding day is over.

Get Creative with the Meal: Do you need to serve your guests a formal, three-course meal on your wedding day? The answer these days is no. The meal you serve at your reception can be whatever you want. If you are looking to cut costs, schedule your wedding for the middle of the day and have a cocktail hour themed reception. You can still serve drinks, but instead of a formal meal, serve appetizers and snacks. You can also hold your reception in the afternoon and serve a lighter, cheaper lunch instead of a pricey dinner.

Make your Dad Feel Special at your Wedding

In honor of Father’s Day we thought it would be fun to share some ways in which you can make your father feel loved and included on your big day.

Even though the Father of the bride may be helping to pay for the actual tab, he is usually not as involved in the plans. Just because he doesn’t have an opinion on your color palate or whether you use satin or organza does not mean that he does not care. In fact, seeing his little girl get married may be almost as big of a deal for him as it is for you.

Interesting Wedding Tidbits – Did You Know That…

We love sharing interesting and useful wedding information with our community. So did you know…

  • Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.
  • Seventeen tons of gold are made into wedding rings each year in the United States!
  • Queen Victoria started the Western world’s white wedding dress trend in 1840 — before then, brides simply wore their best dress. Photo by iStockphoto.com

  • The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where revelers broke a loaf of bread over a bride’s head for fertility’s sake.
  • The custom of tiered cakes emerged from a game where the bride and groom attempted to kiss over an ever-higher cake without knocking it over.
  • In many cultures around the world — including Celtic, Hindu and Egyptian weddings — the hands of a bride and groom are literally tied together to demonstrate the couple’s commitment to each other and their new bond as a married couple (giving us the popular phrase “tying the knot”).
  • On average, 7,000 couples marry each day in the United States.
  •  Fifteen percent of wedding receptions are outdoors.
  • Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve are the two busiest “marriage” days in Las Vegas!
  • On her wedding day, Grace Kelly wore a dress with a bodice made from beautiful 125-year-old lace.
  • In the symbolic language of jewels, a sapphire in a wedding ring means marital happiness.
  • Only 2 percent of bridesmaids will actually wear their dresses again.
  • One in five couples include purple in their wedding color palette.

Wedding Sabotage — It Really Does Happen!

So we all love a good bridal movie where there is a little wedding sabotage to add drama (Made of Honor, 27 Dresses, My Best Friend’s Wedding…just to name a few), but can you believe that actual wedding sabotage occurs? It does! And sometimes by the people we would least expect it from. Check out these true stories of wedding sabotage on The Knot, True Tales of Wedding Sabotage. If you have your own story, please share it with us as a comment on this blog post!

We can’t imagine what we would do if someone actively tried to sabotage our big day…What would you do?!

In Honor of Mother’s Day — Easy Ways To Make Your Mom Feel Special On Your Wedding Day

As we were doing research for our Mother’s Day blog entry we came across this one (below) by Sarah Shewey of Pink Cloud 9 and after reading it we just had to share it! To see her full article, please click here.

They may sometimes drive you crazy, but in the end you have your whole life to thank your mom for. Most couples have very little time to spend with all of their guests, which can sometimes leave your mom feeling neglected and make the pain of losing her baby sting just a little bit more. So in honor of Mother’s Day, I came up with a list of easy ways that you can treat your mother like a queen on your big day.

1. Go shopping with her for her dress. What to wear can be a big concern of mother-of-the-brides (MOBs) and mother-of-the-grooms (MOGs). Spending a day with your mom to worry about what she’s going to wear and be comfortable in will make her feel great!

2. Arrange for a car and driver to take her to the wedding and back home. Because seriously, who wouldn’t want this kind of treatment?

3. Write a special love note to her in your program. Your mom is always bragging about you to her friends and family… why not take the opportunity to brag about her? I bet she’ll keep it in a scrapbook for you, too!

4. Treat her to hair, makeup, or a manicure on the Big Day. Letting your mom know that you want her to look and feel as good as you do on your wedding day will make her shine with confidence!

5. Include pictures of her in your slideshow. Yes, we want to see those embarrassing pictures of you as a kid with your mom in the backyard, the awkward teenage pictures with your mom’s trend-of-the-moment haircut, and pictures of your mom on her wedding day. Giving your guests a peek into your family life will instantly make the room feel warmer.

6. Make special decorations on her chair or place setting. It doesn’t have to say “MOB” on the back, just a little ribbon on the chair or a special handwritten “I love you” note on her place card will be a touching surprise for your mom.

7. Schedule in a dance for all the moms with their kids. Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” anyone? How about Whitney’s “I’m Every Woman”? Any other suggestions?

8. Walk down the aisle with your mother and your father. Breaking this tradition couldn’t hurt — but you’ll want to make sure that dad is okay with it first.

Got Engaged? Insure Your Ring.

If you got or are getting engaged, you’ll want to protect that new bling.

The average value of an engagement ring is around $5,000, according to a survey from wedding site TheKnot.com, but most homeowners or renters insurance policies don’t cover much of that value if it’s lost or stolen.

Policies typically cover a set amount for jewelry if it’s stolen—around $2,000—says Jeanne Salvatore, spokeswoman for the Insurance Information Institute. (That limit typically doesn’t apply in a disaster covered by the policy, she says.) There’sRings usually no coverage if the ring is lost.

So you’ll likely need to get additional coverage for the full replacement cost of the ring. This usually comes in the form of a floater or endorsement, Ms. Salvatore says. Both typically offer coverage if you misplace the ring and don’t have a deductible.

If you don’t have homeowners or renters insurance, consider buying a stand-alone policy, says John Egan, managing editor of InsuranceQuotes.com. The Jewelry Insurance Brokerage of North America and Jewelers Mutual Insurance Co. offer such policies.

The price of additional coverage or separate policies depends on the type of policy, where you live and the value of the ring. Coverage for a $5,000 ring ranges from about $15 to $100 a year, says Mr. Egan.

To get any coverage, you’ll usually need the receipt from a new purchase or, if the ring is an heirloom, a written professional appraisal.

Wedding Personalization: Friend or Foe?

If you are planning a wedding (or getting ready to plan one) chances are that you have already made a board on Pinterest and you are drooling over all of the creative ideas that you just have to do for your own wedding. Let us stop you right there for a second. Before you become overwhelmed, there are somethings to consider about all of these DIY projects sweeping the web.

  1. Project stylists: Most of these great DIY projects have a TEAM working on them. Yes you might have your bridesmaids, but are they all creative project stylists (probably not, unless you have the world’s most awesome friends).

A wedding gift from a very creative friend of mine!

Suelyn’s Creations: A wedding gift from a very creative friend of mine!

  2. Demonstrations: In a tutorial or video it might look like it only takes a few minutes to complete a project but let us reassure you, this is NOT the case. Videos are edited and tutorials are often over-simplified. Most DIY projects will take you longer than you think — so plan accordingly.
  3. Personalized will cost you: When you see a picture of a reception table that has every element personalized this not only takes mass amounts of time but LOTS of help and a large budget as well. Many DIY projects seem cost-efficient but when you multiply one item by the number or tables or guests (depending on the project you are undertaking), the expenses add up quick.
  4. Stress: As a busy bride, adding a major DIY project to your to-do list has the potential of turning you into a raging, stressed-out bridezilla. Pick your projects wisely based on the time you have available in your schedule.

Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love DIY projects (I, myself am a scrapbook enthusiast) but we just want to share some facts with your before you undertake a DIY wedding project.

Happy Planning! XO
